Istanbul lies across the continents of Asia and Europe. Previously known as Constantinople, the city has a history of eastern and western influences reflected strongly through its architecture, customs and food. You will need at least a weeks stay to appreciate the city and surrounds. All budgets from backpackers to 5 star travelers are catered for in Turkey, comparing favorably with most large European cities. The vast array of things to see and do, and great food with so many diverse eateries will not disappoint, keeping Turkey as one of the most interesting travel hotspots in the world. And with a civilization dating from before Rome made its entrance 1700 years ago, Istanbul has long been a cradle of ancient history with changing influences through time, and reflected in everything you will see, do and eat.

Turkey has so much to see and enjoy, some of the favorite’s include:

Galata Tower was first built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinianos in 508 AD, and then rebuilt in 1349 AD. It is one of the oldest towers in the world and sits proud and high in the Istanbul skyline.

Troy is an ancient city in modern-day Turkey, and also the setting for the Trojan War in Homer’s epic poems the “Iliad” and the “Odyssey.” With stunning views of the coast it is well worth visiting.

Ephesus has a long history, with it’s importance established by growing Roman development from 133BC, and becoming the capital of Asia Minor in 27 BC. The capital continued to grow and expand it’s influence, with the end result of many ancient ruins to visit and enjoy.

Oludeniz is outside of Fethiye, on the west coast of Turkey. The town has many great beach resorts, bars, and restaurants. The Blue Lagoon at Oludeniz is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. Its sandy shore along the sheltered turquoise lagoon will not disappoint.

Turkey is worth visiting any time of the year; and through spring and early or late summer it remains warm with the crowds lighter on the ground. However by mid-summer(July, August) it’s very warm to hot, and can get crowded with masses visiting through the northern hemisphere summer break . In winter it gets quite cold, best to rug up.

Before traveling anywhere overseas, it is recommended to check with your embassy or similar for travel warning updates before you go.
